Purpose

The intent of those at LODAP is to collaborate with Living Organ Donors, medical professionals, research institutions, transplant organizations, legislators and transplant centers to identify the needs of Living Organ Donors in order to facilitate the best outcomes for living donation. In addition to LODAP conducting their own projects, the nurses at LODAP will be collaborating with other institutions and organizations regarding living organ donation. LODAP would like to commend the institutions for their dedication to the Living Organ Donor. Below are listings of institutions and/or research projects LODAP is currently involved with regarding living organ donation.

LODAP PROJECTS

INSURANCE ISSUES

LODAP has been made aware insurance has become an issue with Living Organ Donors. Some Living Organ Donors are being denied insurance or experiencing their insurance policies being cancelled when the insurance company is informed they are a Living Organ Donor.

Recently LODAP was contacted by someone at a transplant center in New York State who stated they are experiencing issues with the recipient insurance  companies. Some insurance companies are not approving payment of the Living Organ Transplant until the Living Donor provides information concerning their own personal health insurance. If the Living Organ Donor does not have health insurance, they must submit a statement stating they do not have health insurance. If the Living Organ Donor has health insurance, the Living Organ Donor must submit their personal health insurance information, which is given to the recipient's health insurance company. The recipient's insurance company will not proceed with the Living Donor Transplant UNTIL the Living Organ Donor's health insurance company agrees to pay for the Living Donor's surgery OR they receive a denial from the Living Organ Donor's health insurance company.

The transplant centers are attempting to protect the Living Organ Donor by advocating in their behalf but they are experiencing resistance by the recipient's private health insurance company. In order to assist the transplant centers and Living Organ Donors, LODAP is gathering information to lobby for legislation to protect the Living Organ Donor regarding insurance issues.

If you are a Living Organ Donor and have experienced one or more of the following issues, please write to us so we present the issues to Congress. Please send an explanation of the issue(s) you experienced and if possible include letters from the insurance company. You may send the information to our P.O. Box OR you may send an e-mail to insresearch@lodap.com . If you experienced a problem not listed below, please include any new issues we might not be aware of.

1. Insurance Denial - You were denied health, life and/or short term disability insurance before or after donation.
2. Cancellation - Your health, life and/or short term disability insurance was cancelled before or after donation.
3. Premiums - Your insurance premiums were either increased or decreased before or after donation.
4. Insurance Information Request - You were asked to provide information regarding your personal insurance to the recipient's insurance company.
